PQ leader vows to end monarchy ties and redirect funds to homelessness

During the closing week of Quebec’s provincial election, Parti Québécois leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon pledged to sever the province’s financial ties to the British monarchy if his party wins on Oct. 5. He said a future PQ administration would cease allocating money to the lieutenant-general’s office and would introduce a bill to abolish the monarchy in Quebec. Plamondon argued that the funds could instead be used to address homelessness.

He has long opposed the monarchy, previously petitioning the legislature to drop the oath of allegiance to the King for elected officials. The stance is part of a broader campaign by Quebec’s major parties to win over voters in the final days before the vote.
