Prague Zoo's five cheetah cubs thrive after storms and mother's illness
Five cheetah cubs born at Prague Zoo have recovered well despite early storms and their mother Daenerys falling ill.
Prague Zoo welcomed five cheetah cubs on June 18, but the newborns faced immediate challenges when strong storms hit the city. Their mother, Daenerys, chose an outdoor enclosure and kept the cubs dry by licking their fur, demonstrating attentive care despite her inexperience. In August, Daenerys contracted an intestinal infection, adding health concerns for the litter.
Curator Pavel Brandl said the cubs look active and healthy as of Friday, but emphasized that a year will be needed to confirm they survive the critical early period. The zoo highlighted the importance of each cub for the endangered species, of which fewer than 7,000 remain in the wild.
Why it matters
The cubs' survival aids conservation of a critically endangered species.
