Pregnant Immigrant Endures Poor Care and Release at Texas ICE Detention Center

Maria, a pregnant woman detained at Bluebonnet ICE facility, faced inadequate nutrition, medical neglect and high stress before being released without explanation.

Maria, who was detained in October 2025 after telling ICE officers she was pregnant, spent six months at the Bluebonnet Detention Center north of Abilene, Texas. She described the meals as cold, watery chicken and overcooked vegetables, and said the commissary offered mostly junk food. Her medical files reveal high blood pressure, gestational diabetes and insufficient weight gain during the third trimester, compounded by irregular prenatal vitamin refills.

Advocacy groups and a Senate investigation have highlighted similar deficiencies for pregnant detainees. ICE released Maria in April without providing a reason, forcing her to quickly secure medical care and confront the loss of her job and insurance. Her immigration case continues, with a removal order already issued and an appeal pending.
