President calls for renewed focus on reading and cultural education in Portugal
President António José Seguro urged a fresh boost to reading and cultural education policies, citing recent PISA results that show declining literacy.
At the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon, President António José Seguro addressed the fourth edition of Book 2.0, an event run by the Associação Portuguesa de Editores e Livreiros. He called for a new impetus in policies that promote reading and cultural enrichment, arguing that recent PISA findings reveal a decline in literacy and a reduced enjoyment of reading in many developed nations. Seguro stressed that the responsibility lies primarily with schools but also involves families and every citizen.
He linked strong reading habits to resistance against exclusion, ignorance, populism and the challenges posed by artificial intelligence. The president concluded that a nation that reads is better equipped for future challenges.
