President Lee demands decisive action against false claims on Brazilian egg imports
President Lee Jae Myung urged a strong government response to misinformation about eggs imported from Brazil, calling the rumors harmful.
In a private Cabinet session, President Lee Jae Myung pressed Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Minister Song Mi-ryung for a firm strategy to counteract misinformation surrounding Brazilian egg imports. Lee emphasized that stirring public sentiment with false data does not reflect influence or competence. Media reports had claimed the government purchased eggs at 39,000 won per tray and resold them domestically for roughly 4,000 won, sparking accusations of wasteful spending and insinuations of a "left-wing connection" with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The ministry responded that the imports were a precautionary measure to safeguard against potential shortages caused by highly pathogenic avian influenza. It also noted that Brazilian eggs made up just 0.8% of all egg imports as of the end of September. Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung reiterated the need for clear communication to dispel the rumors.
