President Lee urges constitutional amendment to honor historic democratization uprisings

President Lee Jae Myung asked the National Assembly to start a constitutional revision that would embed the legacy of the 1979 Busan-Masan and Gwangju democratization movements.

At a commemorative event in Seoul for the 47th anniversary of the 1979 Busan-Masan pro-democracy protests, President Lee Jae Myung appealed to the National Assembly to pursue a constitutional revision. He argued that the preamble should explicitly mention both the Busan-Masan uprising and the Gwangju democratization movement, describing this as the smallest step to honor the sacrifices made for the nation’s sovereignty.

Lee emphasized the need to remember the blood-stained history of defending democracy. He urged lawmakers to collect public opinions and hold constructive debates on the proposed amendment. The president framed the initiative as a means to embed the spirit of past democratization efforts into the country’s fundamental law.

Why it matters

Embedding historic democratization movements in the constitution could shape South Korea's future legal and political framework.
