President Murmu approves 78 gallantry medals, most to anti-Maoist units

President Murmu authorized 78 gallantry decorations, including 13 posthumous awards, with the majority going to forces fighting left-wing insurgents.

On the eve of the 80th Independence Day, the head of state signed off on a batch of 78 bravery honors for members of the defence and central armed police forces. Thirteen of these recognitions are posthumous. Police medals dominate the list, as 197 of the 301 awards were granted to personnel operating in regions affected by left-wing extremism.

Why it matters

It signals official recognition of forces combating left-wing insurgency ahead of a national holiday.
