President Nicușor Dan calls CSAT meeting amid Mangalia shipyard takeover talks
President Nicușor Dan has summoned the Supreme Council of National Defence for Thursday, with the agenda still undisclosed. The session comes as the Mangalia shipyard is slated for acquisition by German group Rheinmetall and MSC, pending regulatory approvals.
President Nicușor Dan has called a meeting of the Consiliul Suprem de Apărare a Țării for Thursday, but the subjects to be addressed remain unknown. The convening occurs amid ongoing talks for the German Rheinmetall group and MSC to take over the Mangalia shipyard, a transaction that hinges on mandatory approvals from competition and foreign-investment regulators. The Commission for the Examination of Direct Investments (CEID) must issue its opinion before the deal can close, and the CSAT may be consulted if the acquisition raises national-security concerns.
A similar case involved E.ON Energie România's agreement with the Hungarian MVM group, which also required CSAT input. On Tuesday, a confidence vote will decide whether Luca Niculescu's government secures parliamentary support; if approved, the premier and newly appointed ministers are expected to join a CSAT session for the first time.
Why it matters
The CSAT meeting could influence the approval of a major foreign acquisition that has security and economic implications for Romania.
