President Prabowo orders universal bank account coverage for all Indonesians
President Prabowo Subianto directed his cabinet to ensure every Indonesian citizen holds a bank account, aiming to raise financial inclusion.
President Prabowo Subianto told his cabinet that every Indonesian should have a bank account, a move meant to boost both inclusion and financial literacy. The directive was delivered at a limited meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, where Airlangga Hartarto highlighted a joint OJK-BPS survey indicating a 93.62% inclusion rate and 63.57% literacy level. State-owned banks, notably Bank Rakyat Indonesia and Bank Syariah Indonesia, have been tasked with creating accounts for the public.
To facilitate this, population and civil registration data will be merged with Bank Indonesia’s payment infrastructure. Future government assistance programs are expected to be paid directly into these new accounts. The Financial Services Authority aims to lift national inclusion to 98% by 2045, as outlined in the RPJPN, with students identified as a key focus group.
