Pret a Manger's Southern California rollout collapses, leaving only LAX outlet open
Pret a Manger's ambitious plan for 40 Southern California stores has failed, with just the airport location remaining operational.
Pret a Manger, known for its quick-service baked goods and salads, unveiled a plan in 2022 to open 40 locations across Southern California. The chain launched its first SoCal store in Westwood in 2024, followed by sites in Westfield Century City, Studio City and the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX. Backed by Dallas Holdings, the strategy relied on franchise partnerships to double the business within five years.
However, the Westwood and Century City stores closed in early April, and the Studio City venue has effectively disappeared from online listings, leaving only the LAX concession, which is managed by ASUR Airports, still serving customers. Pret and Dallas Holdings have not offered an explanation for the abrupt retreat, and the brand continues to operate over 400 locations worldwide, predominantly in the UK and New York City.
Why it matters
The retreat highlights challenges for U.S. expansion of foreign fast-food brands and may affect local employment and franchise investors.
