Prime Minister Anwar pledges financial aid for taxi, hire-car and school-bus drivers

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced a new assistance package for taxi, hire-car and school-bus drivers, recalling their support during the 1998 Reformasi period.

Speaking in Putrajaya, Anwar Ibrahim said he would not forget the taxi drivers who helped him when he was detained in 1998. He launched a scheme offering up to RM1,000 to taxi, hire-car and school-bus operators. The move is presented as a way to honor their past loyalty and improve their welfare under his government. Anwar, who also leads the PKR party, linked the assistance to the hardships he endured during the Reformasi era.

Why it matters

It shows how Malaysia's leader is turning personal history into policy, affecting thousands of transport workers.
