Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan prepares statement as farmer protest turns violent in Victory Square
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan is drafting a press release hours after a large shepherd protest in Piața Victoriei escalated into clashes with gendarmerie forces.
Around 10:00, shepherds gathered in Piața Victoriei to protest difficult conditions in animal husbandry, particularly export restrictions on sheep and goats and the handling of disease outbreaks. The crowd blocked traffic and eventually clashed with gendarmerie units, who deployed tear-gas to restore order. Participants chanted anti-government slogans and expressed backing for Călin Georgescu; George Simion appealed for non-violent conduct.
Approximately 3,000 protesters remain on site, stating they will not leave and are prepared to stay overnight or longer. They have submitted a list of demands to the government, focusing on limiting animal culling and securing adequate compensation for affected breeders. In response, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan is preparing a press statement to address the situation.
