Prime Minister Lecornu pledges Notre-Dame-style rebuild of Limoges town hall

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu visited Limoges with several ministers to announce a reconstruction plan for the burned town hall, modeled on the Notre-Dame restoration.

Following the blaze that gutted Limoges' 19th-century town hall, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu and a delegation of ministers traveled to the city to meet the mayor and first responders. Lecornu announced that the reconstruction will follow the same procedural framework used for the Notre-Dame cathedral, with the structure designated as a historic monument and overseen by the state operator OPPIC. Funding will come from a dedicated amendment in the housing bill, with donations tax-deductible at 75 % in 2027, and the municipality will bear no expenses.

Beyond the hall, the government pledged to restore destroyed surveillance cameras, support the Limoges-Paris air link, and fund veterinary training. Two suspects have been placed in pre-trial detention, and authorities warned of heightened security measures ahead of upcoming public gatherings.

Why it matters

The plan secures state-backed restoration of a key historic building and provides broader aid to a city recovering from a major fire.
