Prime Minister Lecornu to lead crisis cell and meet major French mayors
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu will chair an inter-ministerial crisis meeting on Sunday evening and plans to meet the mayors of France’s three largest cities.
In response to recent riots and shop looting across multiple French cities, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced that he will preside over an inter-ministerial crisis cell on Sunday at 19:00. The session will focus on three pillars: the economy and commerce, insurance coverage, and the judicial monitoring of the incidents. Several municipal leaders, including those from Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Limoges, have pressed the executive for firm commitments.
Lecornu also indicated that he will receive the mayors of the three biggest French cities—Paris, Lyon and Marseille—at a date to be set. Marseille mayor Benoît Payan reiterated his request for resources to repair damage and for an explanation of the government's order-keeping strategy. Lyon mayor Grégory Doucet condemned the hours of chaos as "abominable" and called for rapid mobilisation by state, regional and metropolitan authorities to aid affected merchants.
