Prime Minister Magyar sharply criticises State Audit Office over Southern Ring Railway

Prime Minister Peter Magyar denounced the State Audit Office (ÁSZ) during a press briefing, accusing it of inaction on the Southern Ring Railway project.

At a press briefing on Friday, Prime Minister Peter Magyar launched a strong rebuke of the State Audit Office (ÁSZ), focusing on the ongoing Southern Ring Railway construction. He asserted that the ÁSZ had known about irregularities for ten months yet failed to act, and called for the resignation of its president, László Windisch. The ÁSZ issued a statement rejecting the prime minister’s remarks, emphasizing that it has fulfilled all legally mandated responsibilities and praised the European Court of Auditors for its cooperation.

The European Court of Auditors concluded its investigation in July 2026 and shared its findings with both the ÁSZ and the government. The audit office also clarified that its primary oversight role concerns EU fund usage, which is overseen by other designated authorities in Hungary. It concluded by stating it expects correctness, not criticism or support, from officials.
