Prime Minister's Office files criminal complaint over secretive consultancy contract
Hungary’s Prime Minister’s Office lodged a complaint alleging mismanagement, budget fraud and official abuse in a consultancy deal awarded without a tender.
According to a statement on kormany.hu, the Prime Minister’s Office has filed charges of mismanagement, budgetary fraud and official misconduct over a consultancy contract awarded without a public tender. The contract, signed with the U.S.-based company EAC International, was concluded in three days and was justified as a response to the pandemic, despite having no health-related component. The firm’s owner and CEO at the time, Fellegi Tamás, had previously served as a national development minister.
A secret government decree listed his name, phone number and signature, and the contract was exempted from procurement rules by a ministerial decision submitted by Gulyás Gergely and approved by Health Minister Pintér Sándor. The office argues that the payment of public funds was disproportionate to the actual advisory work performed and that the process lacked genuine oversight.
Why it matters
