Prime Minister Takaichi Mulls Major Cabinet and Party Shuffle for Late September
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is expected to reorganize her Cabinet and the Liberal Democratic Party’s leadership in the second half of September, sources say.
According to insiders, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi intends to launch a comprehensive reshuffle of both her Cabinet and the executive ranks of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in the latter half of September. The exact date will depend on when the fall extraordinary parliamentary session is set and on her scheduled attendance at the UN General Assembly in New York. Observers will watch whether LDP Secretary General Shunichi Suzuki retains his role, while Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara is expected to continue as the chief government spokesman.
Takaichi also plans to appoint a representative from the Japan Innovation Party, the LDP’s junior coalition ally, to a ministerial post. This would be the first major reorganization since she assumed party leadership and the premiership last October. It remains uncertain how she will address rivals from the previous LDP presidential contest, including Shinjiro Koizumi, Yoshimasa Hayashi, Takayuki Kobayashi and Toshimitsu Motegi.
Why it matters
The reshuffle could reshape Japan's policy direction and coalition dynamics ahead of key legislative sessions.
