Prince Harry urges better use of veterans' skills at Washington roundtable
Prince Harry called on communities to more effectively employ the expertise of returning service members during a private discussion with veterans and officials in Washington, D.C.
During an intimate gathering in Washington, D.C., Prince Harry urged society to better harness the talents of veterans as they re-enter the workforce. Hosted by The Independence Fund, the roundtable featured veterans, defense officials, military spouses and nonprofit heads, and lasted over 80 minutes. Harry, a former British Army officer, suggested he will soon launch a commercial venture that rewards service members rather than expecting unpaid labor.
Attendees discussed obstacles such as inadequate health-care facilities in smaller towns, strained Veterans Affairs mental-health services, and bureaucratic hurdles in obtaining medical benefits. The Duke praised veterans for their communication, moral leadership and ability to thrive under pressure, but warned those qualities are not being transferred to civilian jobs. He also referenced his own advocacy work, including the Invictus Games and visits to wounded soldiers abroad.
