Prince William launches Children’s Earthshot competition for Indian youth in Mumbai
Prince William introduced a Children’s Earthshot challenge in Mumbai, selecting fifteen 9-to-17-year-old teams to develop environmental solutions and awarding $2,000 to winning projects.
At the Earthshot Prize Summit in Mumbai, Prince William discussed the Children’s Earthshot program with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, emphasizing the involvement of young people in climate innovation. The competition invited Indian students aged nine to seventeen to submit projects that move beyond awareness to concrete action, and fifteen teams were selected for a two-day event featuring presentations, workshops, and mentorship.
Projects on the shortlist address issues such as a water-logged playground and pollution in the Godavari River, and each winning team will receive $2,000 to develop its idea further. Earthshot chief executive Jason Knauf highlighted the remarkable creativity of the finalists and the importance of community-level initiatives driven by youthful optimism. The event marks the largest edition of the Earthshot Prize to date, following previous summits in London, Singapore, Cape Town, Boston and Rio de Janeiro. Since its 2021 launch, the prize has attracted support from figures like Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, Cate Blanchett, Sir David Attenborough and former New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern.
Why it matters
The initiative empowers Indian youth to create real solutions for local environmental problems, fostering early climate leadership.
