Prince William urges simple conversations to boost mental-health support in sport

Prince William highlighted that checking in and listening can be vital for mental-health help, and unveiled a new toolkit for suicide prevention in sporting settings.

Prince William stressed that taking a moment to check on someone, listen without judgment, and show kindness can profoundly affect mental-health outcomes. He reiterated this message on World Suicide Prevention Day, noting that responsibility for prevention must be shared across communities. Together with Kate, he launched the "On Your Side" toolkit aimed at sports clubs, athletes, and fans, providing practical steps for identifying at-risk individuals and initiating conversations about suicide.

The guide advises asking direct questions such as "are you thinking about suicide?" and points users toward further support services. It also challenges the belief that talking about suicide may trigger it, arguing that dialogue helps people feel heard and more willing to seek help. William called for the sporting world to adopt these practices as part of a broader "game plan" to save lives.

Why it matters

It promotes accessible mental-health action in sports, a sector reaching millions of fans and athletes.
