Princess Diana's iconic 1994 'revenge dress' slated for New York auction
The black silk gown Diana wore in 1994 will be auctioned by Sotheby’s in New York, with estimates up to £220,000.
Sotheby’s will auction the black silk evening dress that Princess Diana chose for a June 1994 appearance at the Serpentine Gallery fundraiser. Designed by Greek designer Christina Stambolian, the off-the-shoulder piece features an asymmetric hem and a chiffon train. The house estimates the sale could reach £220,000 when it is offered on Dec 9 during its Luxury Week in New York.
Prior to the auction, the dress will be exhibited in London during Fashion Week, then in Hong Kong and Geneva. It was previously sold at auction in 1997, though details were not disclosed. The dress became notable after Diana wore it on the night Prince Charles was expected to discuss his infidelity on national television.
Why it matters
The sale highlights enduring public fascination with Diana’s legacy and the market value of historic royal memorabilia.
