Princess Eugenie unveils name of newborn daughter Adelaide, born in Lisbon

Princess Eugenie announced on Instagram that her baby daughter, Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank, was born in Lisbon and revealed her chosen name.

Princess Eugenie posted on Instagram that her daughter Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank was born in Lisbon, Portugal, earlier this month, weighing 6 lb 9 oz. She explained that the name pays tribute to three admired individuals, among them her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, and ties together English and Portuguese history, two places the family calls home. Adelaide joins her older brothers, August Philip Hawke (born 2021) and Ernest George Ronnie (born 2023).

The newborn does not carry the style of Royal Highness but is now 15th in the succession line, pushing ahead of her great-uncle, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward. A Buckingham Palace statement noted the delight of the King, Queen and other family members at the news. Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank split their time between Portugal and Ivy Cottage within the Kensington Palace grounds.

Why it matters

The birth adds a new member to the British royal family and shifts the line of succession.
