Princess of Wales launches nature-focused early childhood research initiative
The Princess of Wales announced a new Royal Foundation project to study how outdoor environments support the social and emotional development of young children.
Speaking from a Cornish backdrop, the Princess of Wales highlighted the growing importance of outdoor time for children in a digital age and called on parents to limit device use. She introduced a Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood project that will compile research, expertise and practical insights to understand how nature-rich settings foster social and emotional skills in babies and toddlers. The effort will involve collaborations with UK and international academics, early-years professionals, charities and environmental groups.
The Prince of Wales, who manages the Duchy of Cornwall, is backing the work, which builds on the Princess’s earlier visits to a Danish forest kindergarten and an Italian Reggio Emilia school. Recent polling commissioned by the Centre shows strong parental support for more nature-based experiences, though daily outdoor time remains low. The campaign aims to make nature-focused environments more accessible for families across the United Kingdom.
Why it matters
