Private donor funds €1.4 million restoration of Pompeii’s grandest house
A private benefactor, PompeiAR, is financing a €1.4 million restoration of the House of Marcus Fabius Rufus, Pompeii’s most elaborate mansion.
PompeiAR has pledged over €1.4 million to restore the House of Marcus Fabius Rufus, considered Pompeii’s most magnificent mansion, which has been closed to the public since 1980. The funding covers the refurbishment of frescoes, including the iconic “Venus of Pompeii,” and builds on structural stabilization and excavation work completed from 2021 to 2023. The sponsorship deal was formalized by Gabriel Zuchtriegel, legal representative of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, and Frank Hoefer, the German entrepreneur behind PompeiAR, who was motivated after reading Zuchtriegel’s 2023 book on the city.
Hoefer highlighted the house’s unique architecture, featuring large windows with wooden frames and likely glass panes, and its four-level labyrinth of rooms and corridors. The park plans to use digital technology to illustrate the site’s complexity and aims to offer guided group tours by Christmas. The restoration also acknowledges victims of the 79 AD eruption still present within the complex.
Why it matters
The project preserves a unique piece of ancient Roman heritage and enhances public access to Pompeii’s most elaborate home.
