Pro Football Hall of Fame revamps selection system after Belichick omission
The Hall of Fame announced a major overhaul of its voting process, cutting selectors and simplifying categories after Bill Belichick was left out of the 2026 class.
In response to criticism over the 2026 class that excluded Bill Belichick, the Pro Football Hall of Fame is restructuring its election process. The selector body will shrink to 28 members, three of whom serve as non-voting alternates, ending the era of team-specific representatives. Formal candidate presentations will be scrapped; a single voice will announce each nominee’s résumé before the reduced panel debates.
The Hall will consolidate categories to player, coach and contributor, doing away with the modern-era versus senior player distinction. Separate subcommittees of 11 voting selectors plus three alternates will nominate one coach and one contributor each year. Annual class sizes are expected to range from three to seven inductees, with most years seeing five or six honorees.
