Pro-Kremlin Propagandist Oleg Bessedin Accepts Plea Deal, Faces Seven Years in Estonian Prison

Oleg Bessedin, identified as a pro-Kremlin propagandist, entered a plea agreement on the opening day of his trial before the Harju County Court, where he has been held since his November arrest. Lead State Prosecutor Taavi Pern explained that the deal obliges Bessedin to serve seven years of actual imprisonment and to forfeit assets exceeding €73,000 that were derived from his crimes against Estonia's national security.

The indictment alleges that Bessedin collaborated with Russian state bodies to spread propaganda, disinformation, and sanctioned media content, aiming to divide the Estonian population and bolster Russian political objectives. The court will consider the agreement on September 28, after which Bessedin will receive a combined sentence of seven years, with eligibility for parole after two and a half years. His lawyer Dmitri Školjar noted that the plea was finalized during the day’s proceedings and that additional restrictions, including solitary confinement, will be lifted, allowing Bessedin contact with his family.
