Pro-life group praises New York's plan to destroy expired abortion pills

A pro-life organization welcomed Governor Kathy Hochul’s decision to discard about 150,000 unused abortion pills that have expired.

Governor Kathy Hochul’s administration is set to eliminate a 2023 purchase of misoprostol, a component of medication abortions, after the drugs expired. The state bought enough for about 12,500 doses, costing $112,000, but never used them, prompting the Department of Health to schedule their destruction. Shawn Carney, CEO and president of 40 Days for Life, praised the action as a win for the pro-life movement, saying the state had no other option but to discard the pills.

He added that the decision prevents potential abortions that might have occurred using the stockpile. The purchase was made amid legal battles over mifepristone, the other drug in the regimen, and follows similar stockpiling efforts in states like California, Massachusetts and Oregon after the 2022 Dobbs decision.

Why it matters

It shows how states are handling unused abortion medication amid ongoing political and legal battles.
