Professor argues anti-Zionism equates to antisemitism in Canada

Emeritus sociology and Jewish studies professor Robert Brym wrote that rejecting the right of Jews to a state should be classified as antisemitic, drawing on a 2026 poll of 626 Canadian Jews that shows overwhelming support for Israel’s existence. He points out that most Canadian Jews view backing Israel as a core element of their identity, whereas synagogue attendance and observance of religious law are less universally deemed essential.

Brym challenges the Jewish Faculty Network’s claim that Jewishness is solely a religious matter and its rejection of the IHRA working definition, which includes denying Jewish self-determination. He also highlights the Network’s limited website content on recent events. While acknowledging criticism of Israeli policies, Brym maintains that a small minority of anti-Zionist Jews are misguided.
