Progressive House members unveil bipartisan AI oversight blueprint
Congressional progressives are promoting a multi-track plan to regulate artificial intelligence and big-tech, seeking overlap with libertarian-leaning Republicans.
Progressive lawmakers are rolling out a comprehensive AI and big-tech regulatory agenda, hoping to find common ground with right-leaning, civil-liberties focused members of Congress. Progressive Caucus chair Greg Casar emphasized that protecting freedoms must accompany AI development, calling for stronger privacy safeguards and a ban on AI-enabled surveillance, including the refusal to renew certain warrantless surveillance authorities.
He also advocated for eliminating a data-broker loophole that permits government access to consumer information via corporations. The effort coincides with a bipartisan draft bill introduced by Representatives Lori Trahan and Jim Obernolte, as well as a Democratic-run commission slated to produce its own set of proposals. Casar described recent local resistance to AI data-center construction as an early sign of a larger political shift, predicting intensified opposition from voters across the spectrum as AI-driven job displacement grows.
