Proliferative kidney disease threatens trout and other salmonids in Czech rivers
Researchers found proliferative kidney disease in most of the 59 sites surveyed across 42 Czech rivers, endangering trout, Arctic char, grayling and other salmonids.
A joint survey by scientists and anglers detected proliferative kidney disease at the majority of 59 locations on 42 rivers in Czechia and Moravia. The infection, which has no known treatment, can cause local extinctions of salmonid populations. Similar outbreaks have been reported in North America and Europe, raising concerns for aquaculture in nations such as Norway. The team also tested experimental measures to curb the spread of the disease.
