Proposed education minister seeks intelligence data to probe Bistrița school knife attack
Sorin Costreie, the nominee for education minister, said he will request SRI information to understand why no action was taken before a student stabbed a teacher and a classmate in Bistrița.
Sorin Costreie, slated to become Romania's minister of Education and Research, announced plans to obtain data from the intelligence service SRI to investigate why warning signs were missed before a seventh-grader attacked a teacher and a peer with a knife at a Bistrița gymnasium. He reported that both the injured mathematics teacher and the student who intervened have survived surgery, though the teacher's lung was affected.
Costreie described the episode as part of a broader pattern of radicalisation, citing a similar case in Poland, and stressed the need for education that teaches care for others. He is considering a European initiative to restrict social-media access for children under 14 and backs a temporary ban suggested by social-democrat Bogdan Ivan. Additionally, he said legislative changes could allow security checks, such as metal detectors, at school entrances to prevent weapons from being brought in.
