Proposed UK levy could add over £5,000 to farmers' 4x4 vehicle costs

The Treasury is considering a “Large Vehicle Levy” that would charge an extra £10 per kilogram over 1,600 kg, potentially raising the first-year tax on a new Toyota Hilux to more than £5,000.

The UK Treasury is weighing a new “Large Vehicle Levy” that would levy an additional £10 per kilogram for vehicles weighing more than 1,600 kg. The proposal, drawn from recommendations by a Brussels-based eco-group, is slated for discussion ahead of the upcoming Budget. If adopted, the levy would raise the first-year Vehicle Excise Duty on heavy pickups such as the Toyota Hilux by more than £5,000.

Rural advocates argue the measure would unfairly penalise farmers and other countryside workers who depend on these vehicles for daily tasks. They describe the plan as a grave mistake that would punish rural Britain for continuing to drive as they have traditionally. The Treasury has not yet ruled out the proposal.

Why it matters

The levy could dramatically increase operating costs for UK farmers who rely on heavy trucks for their work.
