Prosecutor Discloses Unseen Evidence of Stalking and Threats in Anthony Murder Case

At Karmelo Anthony's appeal hearing, prosecutors revealed texts and a stalking report that were omitted from the original trial.

During the appeal hearing for Karmelo Anthony, the prosecutor disclosed that his ex-girlfriend reported to a school assistant principal that Anthony was stalking her after their breakup. Text messages from Anthony showed him sending a knife picture and writing, "I'm low key on the verge," suggesting a spiraling mindset. These communications and his obsession with weapons were never presented to the original jury.

The omission resulted from a "gentleman's agreement" in which the defense promised not to raise Austin Metcalf's juvenile graffiti offenses, which contained racist content, in return for the prosecution withholding the stalking evidence. The murder occurred under a tent at a high-school track meet, where Anthony stabbed Metcalf to death. The prosecutor emphasized that the withheld evidence painted a more disturbing picture of Anthony's behavior leading up to the crime.

Why it matters

Newly revealed evidence could affect Anthony's conviction and highlights how plea deals shape trial narratives.
