Prosecutor General demands coordinated state action after school knife and hammer attacks
Prosecutor General Cristina Chiriac called for an immediate, unified response from authorities following recent school attacks involving a hammer and a knife.
In reaction to two recent violent incidents in Romanian schools—a hammer attack on two pupils at a Bătești high school and a knife assault that wounded a student and a teacher in Bistrița—Prosecutor General Cristina Chiriac urged a firm, coordinated state response. She stressed that safeguarding children and educators is a fundamental obligation of the government, but any interventions must honor minors' rights, the presumption of innocence, and proportionality.
Chiriac called for rapid criminal investigations and for perpetrators to face legal consequences. She expressed support for the government's initiative to improve collaboration between the Public Ministry, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Education and child-protection bodies to identify risks early, prevent serious incidents, and enable coordinated action. The prosecutor also highlighted the need to monitor online threats, extremist influences, access to dangerous objects and concrete signs of planned violence, while ensuring measures remain proportionate.
