Prosecutor says suspects identified in police commander assault in Belfort
The prosecutor announced that several individuals have been identified as likely perpetrators of the attack on a police commander during Friday's protests in Belfort.
During clashes linked to a high-school movement in Belfort, a police commander was struck, prompting a murder-attempt investigation. Prosecutor Paul-Edouard Lallois reported that several suspects have now been identified as possible main assailants and hopes to detain them within a day. One 17-year-old arrested the day before was freed after no evidence linked him to the beating.
The magistrate also denied social-media rumors that the officer submerged the youth, explaining that the stream was shallow and the individual voluntarily entered the water while fleeing. Video footage shows the officer and the protester struggling near the stream, but it does not confirm any drowning. The investigation remains open for attempted homicide.
