Prosecutors Complete Evidence Presentation in Senator Marcoleta Plunder Trial on Day One

Prosecutors finished presenting all evidence against Senator Rodante Marcoleta in his plunder case on the first day of trial, the Ombudsman said.

On the inaugural day of the Sandiganbayan hearing, prosecutors concluded the presentation of all evidence in the plunder case against Senator Rodante Marcoleta, according to Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla. The case, filed on July 3, alleges that Marcoleta accepted a P75 million campaign contribution from former House lawmaker Mike Defensor, businessman Joseph Espiritu and Aristotle Viray, which was omitted from his official financial disclosures.

Remulla highlighted that the rapid progression was aided by Marcoleta’s own bail request, leaving few contested facts. No witnesses were called for the co-accused, and the Ombudsman suggested the speed could become a historic benchmark for his office. He expressed hope that the defense will also present its case promptly, potentially allowing the Sandiganbayan to resolve the matter within a year.

Why it matters

The case tests the enforcement of anti-plunder laws against high-ranking officials and could set a precedent for speedy judicial proceedings.
