Prosecutors raid central bank circle as Matolcsy family faces new financial probes

Hungarian prosecutors conducted searches linked to a major bank-related case and separately interrogated former central bank governor György Matolcsy in an Erste Bank abuse investigation. His son, Ádám, re-entered the MBH Bank share market via a Dubai-based transaction.

Prosecutors in Hungary executed search operations related to a significant case of alleged mismanagement at the National Bank of Hungary, and they also conducted a suspect interview of former governor György Matolcsy in a distinct investigation into alleged official misconduct at Erste Bank. The Erste case stems from claims that an MNB deputy exerted pressure on the bank to oust a member of the Vienna-based Erste Group supervisory board.

After his interview, György Matolcsy may defend himself without bail. In parallel, his son Ádám Matolcsy re-entered the ownership structure of MBH Bank, obtaining a 6.2% share through the Quartz Investment Fund, which bought the stake from a Primefund-managed vehicle. This follows a prior sale of a 23% holding to Lőrinc Mészáros' interests about a year and a half ago, now partially reversed. The transaction was coordinated from Dubai.

Why it matters

The probes highlight potential misuse of influence in Hungary's banking sector and signal ongoing scrutiny of powerful families.
