Prosecutors Reject Matolcsy's Complaint, Investigation into Erste Bank Continues
The Budapest prosecutors dismissed György Matolcsy's complaint against accusations in the Erste Bank probe, allowing the investigation to proceed.
György Matolcsy lodged a formal complaint against the accusations related to the ongoing Erste Bank investigation, but the Budapest prosecutors dismissed his request. The case focuses on alleged misuse of official powers by senior officials of the MNB's supervisory division in 2023, who are said to have pressured a Hungarian bank owned by an Austrian parent company. After Matolcsy's interrogation, he was released, and investigators also questioned six additional suspects, all of whom are free while the criminal proceedings continue.
The National Investigation Office confirmed that the suspects were summoned for questioning but were not detained. The controversy stems from earlier statements by former central bank governor András Simor about pressure on Erste Bank, which one outlet MNB leadership has now formally investigated.
Why it matters
The decision keeps a high-profile banking probe active, affecting trust in Hungary's financial oversight.
