Prosecutors take over MNB case amid political strategy and communication firm influence
Hungarian prosecutors assumed control of the National Bank investigation, a move linked to political calculations and advice from a communications firm tied to the ruling party.
In the weeks surrounding the election, Hungary's Supreme Prosecutor's Office opted to assume jurisdiction over the investigation into suspected mishandling of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank foundation, a case originally launched by the National Investigation Office. Although the matter could have been resolved on purely legal grounds, officials emphasized political motives tied to the ruling Tisza Party's interests. Documents submitted by former chief prosecutor Fürcht Pál's lawyer, Horváth Lóránt, show that the move was intended to demonstrate the prosecutor's willingness to cooperate and to enhance its reputation if the probe succeeded.
The strategic arguments were supplied by EuroAtlantic Zrt., a communications consultancy owned by the family of ex-development minister Fellegi Tamás. Senior adviser Mucsányi Marianna, who left a senior radio post in 2019, also contributed, despite internal concerns that the action might appear as aligning with the new power. The case is now being managed by the Central Investigation Prosecutor's Office.
Why it matters
The takeover highlights how legal actions can be used for political advantage in Hungary.
