Protesters Storm OpenAI DevDay Over ICE Contracts and Environmental Impact
Activists gathered outside OpenAI's DevDay in San Francisco, chanting slogans and displaying signs demanding the company end its ICE and military contracts.
On Tuesday, OpenAI's DevDay at San Francisco's Fort Mason was met with a coordinated protest by more than a dozen organizations, including Bay Resistance and the Service Employees International Union. Participants marched in circles, chanted “People over profit” and brandished signs demanding the termination of OpenAI's contracts with ICE and the military, as well as calling for reduced data-center emissions. Many protesters dressed in cardboard robot outfits, waving makeshift scythes, and a large orange sign read “Drop the ICE contract.”
The rally distributed flyers that promoted a “democracy pledge” and linked to Quit GPT, accusing OpenAI of enabling “Trump & ICE violence.” The demonstrators vowed to stay until CEO Sam Altman appeared, booing his name and labeling the company “fascist.”
