Proxima Fusion to invest €140 million in European HTS tape production plant
Proxima Fusion announced a €140 million project to build a factory for high-temperature superconducting tape, a key component for its fusion reactors.
Proxima Fusion disclosed plans to spend €140 million on a new facility that will manufacture high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tape suitable for its fusion reactor designs. The venture will be financed through a blend of private investment and a €21 million contribution from Lower Saxony’s regional government. HTS tape is essential for generating the intense magnetic fields that confine plasma in fusion experiments; the company’s test plant will need about 20,000 kilometres of the material, while a commercial plant would require double that length.
At present, the global supply of HTS tape is dominated by producers in China and Japan, making the new European source strategically important. Other firms, such as Veir, are also adopting HTS tape to improve data-center efficiency.
Why it matters
The plant could reduce Europe’s reliance on Asian suppliers for a critical fusion technology component.
