PSD nominates central bank vice-governor Leonardo Badea to lead a technocratic cabinet
The Social Democratic Party has put forward Leonardo Badea, the vice-governor of the National Bank of Romania, as its candidate for prime minister in a proposed technocratic government.
In a unexpected proposal during negotiations at Cotroceni, the Social Democratic Party suggested Leonardo Badea for the premiership of a technocratic government. Badea, aged 51, holds the position of vice-president of the board and first vice-governor of the National Bank of Romania, and he led the Financial Supervisory Authority from 2017 to 2019. Academically, he earned a doctorate in accounting from the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest after completing a degree in finance, insurance, banking and securities.
Politically, he was elected senator for Dâmboviţa in 2012 on the PSD-USL list, later becoming a deputy in 2016 and briefly chairing the Chamber's Committee for Budget, Finance and Banks, a role granted by Liviu Dragnea. The plan envisions a cabinet of technocrats to navigate the nation through its current economic challenges.
