PSD says it will back a Niculescu-led government only if austerity ends

PSD leader Daniel Zamfir said the party could support a Luca Niculescu premiership, even a technocratic cabinet, but only if the new government abandons the Bolojan-style austerity program.

In a recent PSD leadership session, senator Daniel Zamfir reported that the party does not rule out backing a government headed by Luca Niculescu, including a cabinet composed solely of technocrats. However, PSD insists that any support hinges on a clear break from the austerity policies associated with former premier Ilie Bolojan. Zamfir said the meeting reflected dissatisfaction with the president’s nomination of an external prime-minister candidate, prompting the party to explore ways to unblock the political stalemate.

PSD has authorized Sorin Grindeanu and his team to negotiate broadly, awaiting Niculescu’s own governing program and his vision for the demanded changes. While a technocratic government remains a possibility, the party has unequivocally dismissed any continuation of Bolojan-style austerity, even if rebranded.

Why it matters

The stance could shape Romania's next government and its economic policy direction.
