PSNI says it will supply classified files to the Finucane inquiry once funding is secured

The Police Service of Northern Ireland told the Policing Board it will provide the Finucane inquiry with top-secret material once a secure system is funded.

At a recent Northern Ireland Policing Board session, Deirdre Hargey raised concerns that the Finucane public inquiry is being blocked from reviewing extensive intelligence records due to the absence of a funded secure IT platform. The claim stems from a report by The Detail noting a two-year delay in approving the required system. Assistant Chief Constable Anthony McNally confirmed that the PSNI has not yet received a formal request for classified documents, but pledged full cooperation once the inquiry submits a business case and secures funding from the Northern Ireland Office.

He explained that the police are preparing accommodation at the Seapark Estate to enable direct access to the material through their systems. McNally emphasized a positive working relationship with the inquiry and assured that all necessary access will be provided when the financial and logistical arrangements are finalized.

Why it matters

Access to classified intelligence is crucial for the Finucane inquiry to determine security forces' role in the killing.
