PSOE decries PP AI video while recalling its own long-standing digital attacks
The PSOE says it will consider legal action against the PP for an AI-generated video that accuses party figures of crimes, even as the socialists have a history of using AI and edited footage to mock rivals.
In the run-up to Spain’s general election, the PSOE said it is reviewing the possibility of suing the Partido Popular over an artificial-intelligence video that shows former socialist officials and Begoña Gómez confessing to various offenses. The socialists claim the clip is part of a hostile online campaign by the PP, which they describe as increasingly belligerent on social media. However, the PSOE’s own record includes years of using AI and edited content to attack opponents, such as a TikTok post that placed opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s face on a dancing woman and a PSOE-run news feed that featured fabricated images of Feijóo crying, Vox’s Santiago Abascal painted green, and Madrid’s Isabel Díaz Ayuso tinted red.
The party has also previously likened PP protestors to neo-Nazis and accused the PP leader of colluding with fascism. This back-and-forth underscores how digital tools are now a staple of political mud-slinging in Spain.
Why it matters
It shows how AI-driven misinformation is becoming a weapon in Spanish election battles.
