PSOE of Palencia list members quit in protest over candidate swap

All candidates on the PSOE of Palencia list resigned after the Federal Committee replaced their leader Álvaro Bilbao with Mariluz Martínez Seijo.

Members of the PSOE of Palencia's proposed electoral list have collectively stepped down after the Federal Committee confirmed the replacement of their chosen lead, Álvaro Bilbao, with long-time deputy Mariluz Martínez Seijo. Luis Ángel Marín Paredes and Alicia García Alonso formally communicated their irreversible decision to the party's permanent body, arguing that the federal decision contradicts the overwhelming preference of local militants.

The provincial committee had originally backed Bilbao with 77 affirmative votes and a single abstention, supported by all local party branches, but the national list commission overruled this outcome. In addition to the primary candidates, the two individuals slated as substitutes, Luis Fernando Cantero Mena and Mireia Barrios Bernardos, also announced they would not appear on the final list.

Why it matters

The resignations highlight tension between local party members and the national leadership over candidate selection.
