PT PAL to overhaul former Italian carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi for Indonesia

PT PAL's chief executive Kaharuddin Djenod outlined a full-scale modernization plan for the four-decade-old Giuseppe Garibaldi, slated to become KRI Sriwijaya, Indonesia's inaugural aircraft carrier. The effort will begin with thorough inspections to gauge the platform's current state, followed by engineering design, scope definition, system integration and rigorous testing. Outmoded technologies will be replaced with modern sensors, propulsion units and weaponry, while legacy components are integrated where feasible.

Working alongside Italy's Fincantieri, the project aims to transfer expertise and strengthen domestic shipbuilding skills. Admiral Muhammad Ali previously stressed the necessity of tailoring the carrier's engines, electronics and operational doctrine to the nation's tropical seas.
