PTPTN loan repayments to be deferred for low-income borrowers with income checks
The 2027 Budget will defer PTPTN loan repayments for borrowers earning under RM2,500 a month, subject to verification by the Inland Revenue Board.
The government announced that PTPTN loan repayments will be deferred for eligible borrowers whose monthly earnings are less than RM2,500, with eligibility confirmed through income verification by the Inland Revenue Board. More than 400,000 borrowers fall into this category, according to PTPTN chairman Norliza Abdul Rahim. Borrowers earning between RM2,500 and RM3,000 will be required to make a minimum monthly payment of RM50.
In addition, borrowers who have no arrears and maintain regular repayments will benefit from a 10% discount starting in 2027. The budget also provides tax deductions for employers who repay PTPTN loans on behalf of their staff for payments made from January 2027 through December 2028. These steps aim to align repayment obligations with borrowers' financial capacity and encourage timely loan repayment.
Why it matters
The policy eases debt pressure on low-income graduates and links repayment to actual earnings.
