Publix removes 10-item cap from express lanes to speed up checkout

Publix has eliminated the 10-item restriction on its express checkout lanes, giving staff more leeway to manage queues.

Publix shoppers will notice that express checkout lanes have dropped the traditional ten-item ceiling, according to a company statement. Signs that once displayed “10 items or less” are being swapped for generic “express” labels, letting associates factor in store traffic and order size rather than a strict count. The change is intended to improve queue speed and overall service efficiency, while the retailer also expands self-checkout stations for quick purchases.

The Florida-based chain, operating over 1,400 stores across eight southeastern states, has not specified whether every location follows the new rule or the exact rollout date. Online commentary ranges from support for the added flexibility to concerns that the lane may become indistinguishable from regular registers. Existing payment options and the Publix Promise remain unchanged.

Why it matters

The policy shift could affect checkout wait times for millions of shoppers at Publix stores.
