Pulau Aur coral restoration enters third year, adding 300 rescued nubbins

The Pulau Aur coral restoration programme entered its third year with a three-day event from September 4 to 6 that saw 300 rescued coral nubbins rehabilitated, raising the cumulative total to 550 since the effort began in 2023. The activity was organized by Yayasan JCorp and involved volunteers from Johor Corporation alongside members of the island community. In addition to the coral work, participants carried out underwater and coastal clean-ups, removed crown-of-thorns starfish, and conducted marine-awareness sessions.

The programme, conducted with Reef Check Malaysia, also featured beach games, cultural exchanges and knowledge-sharing to encourage local stewardship. Yayasan JCorp’s chief executive officer Datuk Mizan Yahya said the goal is a 70 percent survival rate for the restored corals after twelve months. The project forms part of broader environmental efforts that include mangrove, seagrass and river clean-up initiatives.
